When you’ve been penned down by the wind for weeks on end, particular dates stand out. Thursday, June 12th will stick in my mind for awhile as that’s the date that the wind laid down in the evening. What has happened since is an explosion of productive fishing in virtually all venues. With so much structure opening up quickly, it took us a few minutes to track down fish concentrations. Starting on June 17th, we began a “full limit run” on Trout here at The Lodge that hasn’t stopped as of this writing. The Capt’s of Castaway Lodge actually left very successful fishing that was essentially “wind proof” in search of emerging concentrations of fish over classically productive structure. I was impressed for a short time with some fish over deeper shell in ESB that have been void the passed several years. High concentrations of male Trout dropped the expectations in these areas pretty quickly, however.
San Antonio Bay is looking good currently with fast action on Trout to 23” over deep and mid-range shell. The Bay is very unstable with what appears to be silt from last years flooding. A little wind or even a strong falling tide can turn it off color in a hurry. San Antonio Bay usually holds green under winds of less than 15 knots and even then you may be able to find a large pocket of Trout Green water over structure “somewhere” in that Bay. Watching the shell reefs is critical when fishing SAB. A gutting low tide will leave most of the shallower shell high and dry. When I see this, it puts me looking to the outer edges of shell pads and tapers on the mud-line. When the backbone of the reefs are buried in water, it’s time to tighten up a bit. Watching for bait activity can narrow the focus. This was never more evident than on a trip the other day when Capt. James Cunningham eased into an area. As he watched the bait working a reef he knew he needed to make a slight adjustment before the first cast was made. Sure enough, the micro-move was productive and fast Trout action was the results of “reading the water and bait”.
The Lodge would like to thank the following guests that fished with us June 16th thru June 21st: Behar County Commissioner Kelly C. and guests, 31 Trout; Fred P. and son Zach, Trout limits to 22”; Oxbow Consulting LLC, 80 Trout limits; Ken K. and guests, 30 Trout limits; Ron P. and guests of Crestview Minimax, 30 Trout limits; Kubco Decanter’s Billy K., 30 Trout limits; Atmos Energy, 60 Trout limits; Trinity Medical’s John S. and guests, 70 Trout limits; Lawrence Marshall Dodge Brandon K. and guests, 30 Trout limits; Benefits Unlimited Matt S. and guests, 40 Trout limits.
