Weather Issues
When fishing through tough weather or unpleasant conditions, I have to remind myself that “everybody wants my job”!

After re-scheduling trips at the beginning of last week ahead of big winds and tough fishing, I’ve found myself on the phone again re-scheduling trips through Wednesday this week due to weather as numerous thunderstorms are lingering over the area through mid-week. I pushed a little too hard over the weekend over staying my welcome in an area with the fishing line on the rods buzzing from static electricity and water spouts trying to form on approaching rain bands. Safety comes first and I don’t think there is a fish in the water worth risking life and limb.

Sometimes you can see the problems coming early enough to make a phone call re-scheduling a trip. Other times, you have to roll with the conditions as they appear. At Castaway Lodge, we pride ourselves on making the calls in the best interest of our clients.

Fishing
The Lodge welcomed the Third Annual Norm Stuemke Invitational trip on Thursday of last week. Norm, well into his 70’s, was a school teacher in the Austin area that made a difference in his students lives. I’ve been fishing with Norm and a couple of his ex-students for about eight years. While he’s in his mid-70’s now, he can still catch fish with the best of them. For about the last four years, a collection of his students have assembled for a multi-boat fishing celebration with their old teacher. They have fondly called it “the Norm Stuemke Invitational”. Norm’s students have gone on to great things like Larry Prellop one of the States top noted artists and owner of a Fine Art Gallery in Salado, Texas; Donny who is an international traveling Blackhawk Test Pilot; Glenn is a recruiter for Texas A& M and the others are business owners or leaders in their fields and businesses. This just goes to show that a teacher can make a difference.

Success has been up and down like a roller coaster. Norm and the boys managed near 30 Trout with a couple of Redfish for their efforts fishing through a slick calm much of the morning. Capt. James Cunningham took Trout limits with the Ken L. group Saturday while I struggled to find a handful of Trout and a couple of Redfish with the Todd P. party. “We had our shot at hot Redfish action”. With swirling winds and plenty of weather I just couldn’t stay on anything. At one point, we had Redfish coming on every cast. As soon as we got into it, a squall came across the bay and shifted the wind 180 degrees blowing us off the fish and shutting the bite down. That’s the way it goes when you are struggling for sure. One things for certain, better days are “just around the corner”!
