Late Week
August 22nd-August 25th
What an awesome rebound in both the weather and the fishing after the stormy weather last week. Capt. Steve Boldt and I scouted immediately after the storms pattern broke mid-week. We covered many a mile hauling water on stop after stop ahead of trips the next day and over the weekend. I’m guessing we were a little to aggressive in our timing. We literally came up with nothing to hang our hats on. The next day, fishing for our clients wasn’t off the charts but it was much better than we had anticipated. Bart S. and guest limited on Trout while Capt. Jake Huddleston took half limits of Redfish and a handful of Trout. Capt. James Cunningham focused on Redfish and had his opportunities with the Mark F. and guests coming up short with youngsters getting the bites and having problems with technique. Capt. Steve Boldt elected to focus on the Port O’Connor area wade fishing various sand/grass venues working with the tide to limits two out of three days on fish to 24”.
Big Changes
Monday August 25th, I hit the water with Terry F. and guests to a “whole new world”. We had a North wind pushing 15 knots and at least a 1 foot tide drop with gutted water and exposed shell. The Bay was fairly off color. Interestingly enough, out first stop yielded 10 Trout to 17” on somewhat of a hesitant bite. We bounced around a bit looking for fishable water and managed to intercept more fish to 20” in about 3’ of water over shell. We ended the day with 22 Trout and all smiles. We are still dealing with super-low water here beginning of September and unusually low tides.
Mid-week August 27th
The surf has opened up a bit but continues spotty on most all but the longest runs to the farthest reaches. The bays are spotty as well with timing playing a big part in the action along with battling slick winds and varying wind direction. The Lodge welcomed welcomed Laddie H. and wife along with Appel Dodge from Brenham in yesterday. Capt. James Cunningham took Laddie and his wife out and managed 10 Trout with a number of fish pushing 25” and a couple of Redfish. They lost several fish to spitting and hook-pulls. I had the Appel Dodge party with old friend Greg Appel starting off hot using some techniques to push through a mid-morning slick off and intercepting fish to 20”. We fought through the “kiss of death” lack of wind finally hitting a strong bite working the down current side of a shell pad on fish to 18”. We ended up with 23 Trout to 20”.
