FISHING REPORT

Mid week we welcomed UniCare/Wellpoint and their guests to the Lodge. With puffing winds and jacked up conditions, we dug in managing full limits of Redfish and oversized fish for the two days we fished including some decent catch and release action. Wendi rolled out the boiled shrimp appetizers and her famous Rib Eyes the first night. Capping some great action on the water, the crew wanted to “taste their catch”. Wendi set the hook with her “signature Blackened Redfish with a boiled shrimp/lump crab meat and oyster Ponchartrain Sauce. It was “to live for”.

Capt. Shawn Gascamp reported a slow grind with half limits of Trout and a few Redfish throwing PCS on fishable structure including mud/grass, sand, and shell. Sunday was another story as we welcomed a crew from Lawrence Marshall Dodge. Arriving at the ramp, I noticed that the water had come up considerably. Fishing amid low water of late, it was a shock to the senses. I knew immediately the fish were going to have spread out and sure enough they had. I took a look a some super shallow real estate that had been fishless and sure enough, they are moving farther back. We made a number of stops on our way to full limits also doing some catch and release and managing an oversize fish around 28.5”. The action was much slower, however.

Hitting the water today with Joe V and guests (my hard luck party if I ever had one), we fished most of the morning on a dead slick calm. We managed a reasonable bite despite the slick water and managed a little better than half limits before hitting the wall. Five stops on fish later and we hadn’t managed a single fish. I knew I was going to have to dig deep to keep this crew from snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. The wind finally puffed a little and I eased up on one of two “sugar spots” that I stayed nine miles from until conditions were right. Sure enough, we managed the right mesh of wind and fish with a positive attitude to go “over the top” including a monster 32” fish in 10” of water that was released. This is significantly slower than anything I’ve seen lately, and it probably going to get more challenging in the near term.

CASTAWAY LODGE NEWS

The lodge has a new web site under development and it’s “looking awesome”. The site is power packed with a load of new features. If you have any recommendations “we’d love to hear from you”. Wednesday, the Lodge welcomes back the Texas Outdoor Writer’s Association for their second trip with Castaway Lodge in six months. Welcome back!

Come home when you can!

Bowed-Up!
