Trout and Redfish Hot, Despite The Cold

Fishing continues extremely hot for Trout and Redfish despite cooling temperatures. Even in the teeth of the cold front on Saturday afternoon, our clients with Wave Wash of Dallas managed excellent catches of Trout and Redfish after taking full limits of ducks and several geese during the morning hunt. Special thanks to Castaway Lodge Capt’s James Cunningham; Steve Boldt; and Mark Robinson for precise execution and logistics in some pretty tough weather. We are picking up more and more ducks with each passing cold front. As our water levels steadily drop, we look for duck hunting to continue to improve.

This past week has been and continues to be awesome for Team Castaway Lodge! We have been boxing limits of trout by 10:00 am on most mornings fishing from the boat throwing artificial and live shrimp under a popping cork. We still continue to key in on birds working the water around reefs in San Antonio Bay.

Similar results have been coming in using artificial lures and most notably pumpkin/seed chartreuse using jig heads ranging from 1/8oz. to 1/16oz. The bite has been very aggressive. Topwaters have also been working well for Capt. Steve Boldt in chrome/chart and chrome/blue Skitterwalk and Spook Jrs. In a conversation the other day Steve mentioned varying retrieves and quartering the wind on casts has been essential to productive topwater fishing. Watching bird activity early has been a key to locating Trout concentrations. We are seeing the schools working different areas along crests and tapers of the reefs day to day. Bird activity has been getting us in the ball park quickly.

From boat fishing with Popping Cork/Shrimp to wade fishing with artificial lures, one thing to note is that Trout fishing is taking off. As always, Trout fishing has been “weather dependant” for best success. It’s still spotty but greatly improved over late August and September which turned heavily toward Redfish. Trout seem to be schooling under concentrations of bait over area shell reefs. We’ve had a lot of bird activity early and when that intercepts some type of structure, it points to a solid bite.

Friday, the water levels started rising with a big South wind and sure enough it kicked things off again in the upper reaches. Limits of Redfish and monster Blue Catfish came for area anglers. Fishing a three boat trip with Pesado Construction Saturday, Capt. James Cunningham led a youngster, 6 year old Luke Hunter to top honors in their Corporate tournament. His catch included two Blue Catfish almost as long as he was tall along with upper slot Redfish. Capt. Steve Boldt took “Top Dawg honors” digging his heals in for Redfish limits in the tourney as well.

On the other side of the coin, we are about as operational and normal as ever. Fishing has been taking a turn more and more toward Redfish in the upper reaches of Hynes and Mission Bays with Trout fishing continuing spotty. Along with Redfish, we are seeing an unusual number of Blue Catfish (chicken of the bays and my most favored table fare).

The Seadrift and Port O’Connor areas narrowly escaped the wrath of Hurricane Ike as the storm took a turn to the North. We had some huge tides and picked up roughly 3 to 4’ of water. We had some high winds and no rain except that associated with the cold front coming through the next day. Our infrastructure is 100% in tact and local businesses have re-opened quickly.

Port O'Connor & Seadrift Fishing Report

Congratulations go out to Castaway Lodge Team Capt. James Cunningham for taking 3^rd Place honors in the Port O’Connor Women’s Classic over the weekend with 18.5Lbs. The tournament consisted of around 30 boats and the weigh-in was 3 Trout and 2 Redfish.
