Big blustery winds and unsettled weather have been a big catalyst for feeding activity here of late. With big Southerly winds, the tide pushed up into the parking lot at the boat ramp and that opened up a lot of real estate and relocated fish to shallower venues. Capt. James Cunningham reported pulling into some fish less than a mile from the boat ramp normally to shallow to fish. He said "we eased in on them and never moved" taking full limits of Redfish and almost all of their slot fish. Capt. Chris Cady had to take the airboat all the way to the sand dunes to jump schools of foraging Redfish and Black Drum that had pushed to the back back country. He indicated the Ponies weren't feeding well but the Redfish made up for it.
Anytime we pick up a lot of rain in the San Antonio area, we're prone to freshwater inflows. This is the life blood of our bay system and estuaries and it's always a welcome event. We've got inflows into the bay presently and obviously with the big rainfall to our North, we're expecting a replay of past years. You've heard me discuss the loss of bottom grasses during the drought years from 2009 to the Spring of 2015 when the rains came and boy did they come. At the time, I called it "a punctuated end to the drought cycle". In the Spring of 2015 I also "called bottom" on Trout fishing in our area and sure enough we deck loaded them through the late Spring and Summer of 2015. While there's lots of healing left to do on the Trout fishery, I feel as if their stock is still rising and the freshwater inflow continuation is just going to promote the recovery. Wade fishing approaches during the Summer months are more than likely going to be "the go to approach" for heavy stringers of Trout especially if we get a really big and prolonged push of freshwater. So get ready to "get wet and wild" with the best guides on the water.
