Back Country to Up Country, Friends In Low Places

Back Lakes Airboat to North SAB Fishing

Bull tides of late have turned the fishing slightly unpredictable. I don’t know anyone that isn’t anxiously awaiting a little water drop. We’ve been working primarily on Redfish from the back reaches of Matagorda Island by airboat to the upper reaches of Hynes & Mission Bay by bayboat. The best action without a doubt is on a good falling tide. Friday, Capt. James Cunningham hit a brick wall with the Jay G. party on his bite up North with an incoming tide all day. Slow action along with some missed fish, break-offs, and hook-pulls just chimed right in with things.

I worked the back country on Matagorda Island by airboat and despite being buried in water and not visually seeing any fish, we managed to “blind fish” our way to a decent initial bite with the Pesado Construction group. Pulling off the initially successful stop brought a handful of dry holes essentially hitting “the wall” before miraculously hitting a slow bite to finish up with limits. The Island fish right now are pretty gaunt, at the lower end of the slot, and few and far between.

Saturday, things opened up as a falling tide meshed with the dawn patrol push and it was a piece of cake with most achieving full limits. Sunday through Tuesday, we were back to a bull incoming tide with no falling water relief in sight. Sunday, we even started with a slick calm and fog. With structure buried in water, things came to a grinding slow down. Sunday, I managed to get some Minnesota boys limited out when I stumbled onto some fish laying on the receiving end of water pushing through a bayou. The bite was up and down but productive on fish to 25”.

Monday, with the Dale S. party, was pretty much an identical repeat of Sunday without eventually limiting out. We had our chances but just couldn’t get it done. Monday I switched the Dale S. group to airboat fishing the back lakes. I was excited to see a slight drop in water levels at the ramp but was disappointed to see them elevated in the back country. Still not much signs of fish there. No doubt they are there, but you couldn’t tell it with all the water.

Teal/Gators

Sunday marked the end of the early Teal season. Today marked the end of the 2009 Texas Alligator Season. We finished up strong with the Lodge hosting the “Sportsmen For Kids” ambassador Don F. and the special guest, Gerrin. Gerrin fought and put down a solid 10 footer to close it out for us. We harvested over 40 Alligators this season from 8 - 12'. Given the lack of freshwater, we consider it a very successful season.

On the Horizon

We’re back on the water tomorrow with the Ron P. group, Insurance execs. on Friday, and Colorado/Texas power engineers on Saturday.

Always With Us!

Special thanks to all of our clients and friends in the fishing and hunting community that have made the lodge a very special place!
