Hanging Curves & Home Runs

Castaway Lodge Seadrift Report
By Capt. Kris Kelley

Sponsored by: Mercury Marine; Air Ranger Airboats; Haynie Bay Boats; Baysport Marine Victoria; Castaway Rods; JL Marine; Pure Fishing; Corrosion X; and, Bob's Machine Shop.

We pushed through the weather to big rewards for guests that "believe we have some idea what we're doing" when it comes to judging the weather forecast and fishing around any realities that come with it. Lots of twists and curve balls of late along with rapidly changing conditions and adjustments on the fly of late. Nobody does an audible better than the guides at Castaway Lodge and that keeps the rods bent, hats off to everybody and all our guides for staying nimble.

One curve ball called for a pullback on Trout emphasis after just a barrage of action on the speckled fish. Redfish turned back into the crosshairs amid turbulent weather and pre-dawn storms crushing water clarity and peaking the feeding patterns of Redfish working mud/grass.

Bait camps are dealing with tough water conditions and bait boats are struggling as freshwater changes the location of shrimp and croaker concentrations. Nothing buckles a bait camps knees like walking in to find 1,000 dozen croaker floating dead at the top of the tanks with 100 quarts of "once live", now fresh dead shrimp. Everyone is making adjustments and we should be back to looking for 95 MPH fast balls with fewer curves near term.
