Smoke'em If You've Got'em!

There isn't anything more satisfying than the sound of a Curado 200 drag ripping after a hookset or the sight of a Castaway rod bowed-up from the cork handle to the tip. That means Texas Redfish on a rampage along with slot Drum. Satisfaction also comes when you meet Mother Nature head on and actually win the game. Late week was nothing more than a spectacular "spotlight on the magnificence of Texas fishing"! The weather was just awesome and our guests were hungry for the big pull of Redfish on the flats.

Sunday, we welcomed Jay K. and guests for a catch and release trip and Capt. Jake put it on them with 17 slot Redfish and multiple Black Drum which were released to fight another day. Tim T. and guest hit the zone on our second stop and we went to working on them fishing mud pockets with a combination of baits. I knew the weather was looking iffy for Monday, so we looked at a number of fish concentrations for a solid backup plan. We released another 9 slot to near oversized Redfish for the effort while taking a little better than half limits of Black Drum along the way.

Calling Bad Weather

Labor Day morning started out as an educated guessing game that was enhanced with Blackberry radar and a sense of where the fish were. Capt. Jake and I made the dark thirty departure knowing full well it was a roll of the dice. Weather, and plenty of it was bouncing around us. Storm movement and direction looked advantageous and we "thought" there was a window to get straight into the action. Well, we were wrong. Shortly after break light, the northwest tracking of the storms turned due North and we got hung up in it with no place to hide. Communicating via text, Jake asked me if there was any end in sight and I mentioned "according to the radar, we've got another little batch and then a pretty good window to get on them". After spending some time in protected waters, the storms eased up and we broke for the last known location of our fish. Despite thunder and lightning, my fish held tight and took advantage of the window to feed aggressively with some fast action and quick limits for Tim T. and guests. Jake was on the flats with the Stuart L. party and the fish are definately more prone to run for it when thunder and lightning are bouncing around. I've seen pre-dawn storms empty back lake shallows and haunts as the fish seem to make a run for deeper water. Regardless, Jake managed to catch up with them working up near limits before the feeder bands from Tropical Storm Hermine gained traction and ran us off the water.

We hope you had a great Labor Day weekend and got to enjoy some of this awesome fishing and weather. Tropical Storm Hermine had us in a total white-out this morning with horizontal rains and plenty of wind. According to our weather station here at The Lodge, we picked up around 5.5" of rain and there is alot of local flooding. Tides seem to be elevated as well.

Alligator & Teal Season

We don't see any shortage of water or locations to take advantage of awesome early Teal hunting. Alligator Season is set to kick off on Friday, the 10th and we've got our eyes on some "good ones" to say the least! You may be familiar with the Pursuit Channel, we are pleased to announce our association with a new show that will be kicking off there in January. "Killin N Grillin" will be hosted by actor Randal Reeder and a variety of celebrity guests. We are excited to host the very first episode featuring comedian John Reep and the best of Texas Alligator hunting here at The Lodge. The show will be highlighting exciting facets of the hunting and fishing experience with an emphasis on "cooking fish and wild game".

Stay safe out there and stay tuned.
