World Cup Fishing, Seadrift to Costa Rica

Castaway Lodge Seadrift Report
By Capt. Kris Kelley

Sponsored by: Mercury Marine; Air Ranger Airboats; Haynie Bay Boats; Baysport Marine Victoria; Castaway Rods; JL Marine; Pure Fishing; and, Bob's Machine Shop.

We've been slugging it out in brutal winds of late to find excellent action on Redfish in the middle to outside slot to 32" along with Trout to 23" as K-Dawg reported earlier in the week.  Capt. Chris and his wife Bianca are at the controls of the lodge while Wendi and I vacation in Costa Rica.  What a magical time as the World Cup rages all over the World.

We were crossing the ferry at Paquera when Costa Rica defeated Greece late Sunday evening and I thought the boat was going to explode. Foot stomping and screaming with red and blue Costa Rica flags grace an enthused crowed of well wishers running all over the place with joy.

Back stateside, Capt. reported strong catches for some groups with lighter catches for others.  With big winds and tore up water, there are just going to be some struggles at times.  A groove is what we are looking for and thus far wade fishing approaches have been the theme that has produced consistent results.  That's new to us, but nothing we haven't seen before.

Hopefully sooner than later, some wind stability is going to open things up but man it's been a long time coming.  We went through something similar during the drought in 09.  Until then, we'll keep applying a century of experience base to the waters we call "home".

Back on the Costa Rica side, Wendi and I are trekking to the Rio Bongo River tomorrow for a run at some monster Snook.  "Robalo" as they are called here, they've got my blood pumping.  I tracked down our guide through local channels. "I want the best local no BS Robalo fishermen around". Guapaleno, he's your guy.  We'll see about that manana. It should be fun.
